Relationship counselling in London
Most relationships have their ups and downs. However, when couples cannot resolve their problems counselling can help them to change the way they interact and find a resolution.
Typical relationship problems that couples encounter include:
- poor communication
- extra-marital affairs and infidelity
- unresolved arguments and conflict
- sexual problems
- lack of trust
- separation and divorce
- commitment issues
- power imbalance
- difficult relationships with extended family
- cultural clashes
- disagreements about money
- living separate lives
- different ideas about child rearing
- adjustment to parenthood.
Counselling helps the couple to communicate more effectively, improve listening skills, understand each other better and build empathy. Together with the couple I facilitate the setting of shared goals to address the difficulties. I also explore what brought the partners together at the beginning of their relationship.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps couples identify thinking biases and unhelpful behaviours that may be maintaining their difficulties. CBT also enables clients to develop more effective problem solving skills.
Where a resolution cannot be found the role of counselling can be to help the couple find an amicable way to end their relationship.
I have experience of working with lots of different types of couples, including gay couples, and couples who have different nationalities, races or religions.
